Hurley introduces Dri-Fit

Hurley is no stranger to the world of extreme sports. Established in 1979, Hurley helped pioneer the sport of surfing, designing surfboards in Costa Mesa, California. Fast forward to today, and you can spot the signature “H” Logo just about anywhere you go in the world. Men, women, children, and even infant’s garments are now produced by the surf-culture powerhouse and continues to promote self expression, planting their roots throughout creative industries such as music  and art/photography. They’ve also incorporated some cool technological design materials into their new performance-infused apparel.

Hurley has teamed up with big brother, Nike, to bring us Hurley apparel made with Nike Dri-Fit material. You can now stay cool and “DRI” regardless if you’re exercising or not, which is especially convenient if you live in a super hot climate like Tucson, Arizona. From your typical performance garments like mesh shorts and tees, to not-so-typical sweat wicking pieces like chino pants and khaki shorts. Fusing functionality and comfort with style, Hurley’s Dri-Fit line is a prime example of sports-infused clothing. So, keep your eyes out for the “Dri-Fit” logo next time you’re shopping for some new Hurley gear. Might end up being the best purchase you ever decide to make this summer.

Fox: More Than Just Motocross

Growing up in Alaska, Fox racing was a a hot commodity with all the locals, whether it was Fox Head apparel, racing gear, or a new set of Fox Shox™ for their snow mobile. Fox is known for their long-time affiliation with Motocross and other motorsport cultures, but those aren’t the only industries of focus for the brand.

Fox has not only started their transition into more of a lifestyle apparel brand, but have re-vamped their look for 2014, to say the least. They’ve simplified a lot of their shirt graphics and gone with a “cleaner” aesthetic, using their signature fox head logo as the staple of the companies’ makeover. Combining their pre-existing design technologies with their newly created tech and performance materials, Fox stepped into the performance sportswear industry with their new active apparel line. The Fox Active line features various lightweight, sweat-wicking garments tailored to the specifications of athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike, while still staying true their x-treme roots. From performance base layers, to various models of running shoes, Fox continues to prove their versatility as an apparel company. Here’s a look at a few pieces from the Active line.

RVCA: All Lifestyles Welcome

When you think of popular California brand RVCA, what’s the first thing that you start to think of? Maybe surfing? Maybe a group of people skateboarding? Well, you’re right about one thing. They do proudly promote the Surf and Skate scenes, but what you may not have known about,  is their true appreciation for all walks of life.

From all kinds of musicians and photographers, to “simple” college kids that maybe like to enjoy a beer or two on the weekends, RVCA is the true definition of a lifestyle clothing brand. Using a platform of classic apparel silhouettes is what I think draws in such a wide demographic of people to their company(not too mention, their cotton tees are super soft!). And there’s no denying this statement when they’re backed by brand advocates like MMA fighter, BJ Penn and world renowned music producer, Yeti Beats, just to name a few.

They continue to bring a fresh perspective to the table with help of their never ending search to discover talented and innovative individuals pushing the limits in their own industry. They designed an ongoing campaign to let us in on their findings, known as the Artist Network Program. In addition, they recently announced their involvement with the  Energy That is All Around art show taking place in NYC. Check out this cool video talking with the artists  you’ll be able to see at the show and browse the ANP tees in stock at Dress Code below:

Diesel Denim Wash Guide

Diesel De-coders!

We’ve received a lot of chatter regarding those weird little codes on the inside tag of Diesel jeans and what exactly those are/what they represent. Well today’s your lucky day, I’m going to quickly break down the meaning behind their codes and the purpose of using them.

Diesel likes to do things a little differently than the other denim companies when it comes to the way they classify their styles, fits, and especially their washes. Those crazy little “serial numbers” are referred to as wash codes. Now, for those of you that are already familiar with Diesel denim or have been down with Diesel since before 2006, you may remember seeing those same funny looking codes under their Indian head authenticity tag. Since then, they’ve started putting the code on the back inside tag of the waist band along with the size and fit info.  Essentially, these wash codes give you the info on the color of the wash for that specific pair of jeans. It can also sometimes relate to the material used to make that pair as well. For example, the code pictured (86C) is a 97% cotton/3% elastane blend where as others won’t have any elastane in them. Another good indicator to differentiate the elastane denim to non-elastane is to look for the word “stretch” on that back tag.

Now That You Know..

So, if you’re already a fan of diesel, I bet there’s a good chance you have that one favorite pair that you’d love to have some more of or even just a second pair of the same wash perhaps. Now that you know this vital information, go into your closet, grab your favorite pair,  find the wash code and start searching for your favorite Diesel jeans! Let us know your favorite wash in the comments below!

Holy Jeans!

Denim Details

This here will be a more informational post generalized on the topic of Denim. I’m going to try and touch on the major FAQs people have about jeans and their price-points. To me, your denim is almost like a piece of your identity. Your denim says a lot about you from the fit of the jean, to the wash, style, and finally your outfit paired with said denim. Trust me when I say this, the fit is absolutely vital to enable you maximum wear for the jeans you buy. You don’t wanna be the dude that’s 5’6″ wearing a 34″ inseam straight fit pair of jeans. I’m going to also breakdown what exactly makes designer denim hold it’s “prestigious classification status” (and their crazy price-points, at times) above the others.

So, how do these “big time” denim companies come up with their prices anyways? What is it that makes those Diesel jeans almost $200 dollars and those Levi’s 501s only $50? Well the truth is, there are a number of different things that set companies like Diesel and G-Star apart from the more basic, affordable denims like KR3W or Levi’s. Here they are..

Weight

One of the most overlooked factors that can determine denim’s price is the “weight” or thickness of the denim. The thickness is measured in ounces and predominantly is given a code that identifies the denim’s weight. So that would mean, the heavier the denim is, the thicker it will be. This will also determine the softness of the denim. So if you purchase some 21 oz selvedge denim, be prepared to walk around in a cardboard box with legs for a few months. Notice how these jeans don’t look like they “fit” his legs and look overly loose/bunched up? This is a good example of how your higher-ounce raw denim will look/fit before the material loosens and starts to break in.

Distressing/Washing

Another factor that can sometimes go unknown is the washing and distressing processes. Big Denim companies put their jeans through a wash process in order to get them to the desired color and softness they’re going for with that specific pair. This is also what gives specific collections their “identity.” The distress process can also help with giving certain collections their signature look. If a company is campaigning a new pair/model of jeans that have say, a little more of a destroyed or “distressed” look to them, they were given that look through distressing. Different techniques such as sand blasting specific areas of the denim is what gives them that aged, or already broken in look. Some companies even go as far as using paint to add discolorations or fading.

Caring For Your Jeans

Now onto the importance of caring for your denim after you’ve made your big purchase. The way you take care of your denim will basically define how long  they will last for you. Bigger companies bank on their denim’s durability as a way of upholding those higher price tags. Where as with certain Levi’s models, I’ve worn completely through them in just one year.  The biggest myth with denim is that you need to wash them regularly like you do your other clothes in order to break them in quicker. This is actually what NOT to do. There are far more DON’Ts than there are Dos for proper at-home washing. For those of you not familiar with the proper way to wash your jeans, check out these tips and tricks from Crosby Press.

Shop It Up!

Now that you have better insight as to where these companies come up with their prices, it’s time to get you some new denim! However, I still strongly urge you to ALWAYS take advantage of any clearance or denim sales you can find. But at least now you will have a better understanding to why the tag to a pair of denim shorts your holding is just as much as a regular pair of jeans. Start scoping out some different denim companies and let me know what brands you guys are liking in the comments below. Remember, you’ll never know what you like unless you go into the stores yourself and try them on.

Street Wear Brands to Look for in 2014

Clothing was, of course, initially invented to keep us warm or cool, and protected from the many elements. But as time went on, clothing became a bit of a statement – each piece reflects a person’s style and interest. Many individuals like to sport clothing that represents their favorite musician/band, sports team, television show, and even their university or school of study. The clothes have been essentially crafted clothing to represent them, and the things choose to wear say a lot about how we portray ourselves.

Getting Inspired
When deciding what kind of style fits on, which can be an ever-changing process, people often look to others in the community to generate ideas about one’s own wardrobes. Most rely on street style to get base ideas of fashion, but a sense of style doesn’t only come from a particular fabric, shape or color – and mostly rely on brands to fuel our unique looks.

Street wear is very important for individuals to look out for in 2014, with over twenty popular brands making their way into stores. Dress Code is an excellent online shop that provides a variety of cool products with even cooler brand names.

It is important to keep an eye out for street wear brands when looking for your next influential style.

Converse Chuck Taylor

Converse Sizing – Getting the Right Size

Converse Size Guide

This here will be a quick size guide or an insider on Converse’s shoe sizing. I will be touching on all three of their lines, Chuck Taylor’s, CONS, and Jack Purcell. I’m first going to breakdown sizing of the Chuck Taylor.

converse-splash-fall-2015

Chucks:

CT Hi Red

The Chuck Taylor All-Star is one of the most iconic sneakers in history and has been around since my parents’ parents were in Grade School. Originally offered in the hi-top and low top silhouettes, converse has expanded their design ideas within the All-Star a ton. You can now find them in any color you can think of as well as just about any material. From Leather, to aged canvas with a zipper feature, there is a pair to catch the whole family’s attention. What some people may not know, is how the sizing works with them…

Chuck Taylor Sizing:

Converse notes that all of their CT All-Stars are unisex sizing, meaning whatever the size is, they will give you the men’s and women’s size for that specific pair. The official Converse site states they run a half-size larger than your normal shoe. They claim if you are a men’s size 11, you would be a Converse size 10.5. While this seems obvious at first glance, I have discovered exceptions in a number of different sizes offered. For example I’m a men’s size 11 through and through no matter the brand / style shoe. However, for Chucks I don’t wear the recommended 10.5, but a whole size smaller. I actually prefer a size 10 over 10.5 when buying a new pair.

I “interviewed” my Dress Code Family to see what their personal experiences have been with the shoe, and it seems that roughly half go down the recommended half-size, while the rest of us go a whole size down. I also noticed that the people going a whole size down in Chuck Taylor’s are also people that wear larger sizes.

Jack Purcell & CONS Sizing:

Jack Purcell

Aero Jams

Comparing the Jack Purcell to the Chuck Taylor, you would think the only difference between the two is the slightly different toe cap on the JP’s, right? In actuality, Converse states that the Jack Purcell model runs true to size in all models, so you won’t have to worry if you are looking to pick these up instead of some Chucks. The CONS line is where things get tricky. CONS is the lifestyle/skate line within the company, offering a wide variety of silhouettes and styles. For the skate collection, everything runs true to your normal shoe size, but with the lifestyle models such as the CTA Pro or Star Player Mid, you are recommended to go a half-size down. What’s frustrating is the lifestyle line is “assorted” in terms of sizing. Some run a half-size down and some are true to size.

My recommendation:

Anyone looking to get a pair of Converse Brand Shoes, is urged to try them on before purchasing. If you know what size you normally wear and are interested in a pair of Chuck Taylor’s, try both the whole and half size down to see what size YOU like better. For any CONS models you may be unsure about, try them on.

Unable to try on a pair at the store? No worries! Just refer to the Converse Official Site’s unisex size guide. An easy way to check the converse’s recommended shoe guide do the following.

1. Visit  converse.com
2. In the search box type the SKU / Style number of the shoe that you are interested in.
3. On the product page converse will either state the following: “Runs true to size” or “Runs a half-size large.”

Denim Guide: G-Star RAW

Denim Guide: G-Star RAW

This will be a helpful guide to G-Star Raw Jeans for the designer denim noob or someone that is currently “on the fence” about making their first “big” denim purchase. I’ll go over different designs available, touch on specific fits, as well as the importance of choosing the right fit for you.

The BIG Purchase:

A lot of people don’t understand spending a little extra money on clothing, jeans specifically, and they automatically assume you’re just paying for the name or the designer label. But that couldn’t be any further from the truth. With G-Star, you are getting quality raw denim that lasts just about forever with proper care/treatment.

Before I was talked into getting my first pair of G-Stars in the summer of 2011, I never really focused on the jeans I would pair with outfits, as long as they weren’t uncomfortable. At first I regretted my purchase considering I live on the surface of the sun, Tucson, AZ until my first  winter here came, and I wore them almost everyday and still wear them to this day, relentlessly. So those of you wearing through your pairs of  Levis 511′s in less than a year, this guide was made for you.

Now onto the Fit:

Sadly there are still  too many people out there that don’t understand the purpose of denim coming in different cuts or “fits”. The point of this, simply put, is because everyone’s body shape is different. G-star not only has several different cuts of denim to choose from, but over 100 different designs within those cuts as well. This means that not all “Arc” or “3301″ designs will be cut the same . There’s quite a few variations within each design ranging from super slim to loose. You want to get a pair of jeans that not only is comfortable, but fits you properly, enabling you to get the most wear out of them. I will go over some different styles G-Star offers and also let you in on what is popular in their line right now.

Skinnies:

DEXTER SUPER SLIM

Dexter: This is considered to be one of G-Star’s “low tapered” fits and with a lower price point than most of their line, this is a great “starter” pair. Sits just below the waist and gradually slims or “tapers” down from your thighs towards the cuff. They have a pretty narrow cuff opening for those of you that like to pair vans or runners with your slimmer cut jeans. I’m happy with the pair I’ve had for about 6 months now and was surprised at how well they’ve kept up with me working in them everyday.

ARC 3D SLIM

Arc 3D Slim: Now onto my favorite design and cut, and top seller of theirs too. The Arc 3D Slim! They do sit below the waist, but they’re not your average pair of slim-cut jeans. They’ve got a nice loose fit throughout the thighs, with just enough taper through the knees and cuff. Looking at them before you try them on, you’ll notice the legs actually curve inward on their own. Hence the word “arc”. Diagonal Inseam Hems on the inner knees give them this shape and helps maintain the life of your denim without any extra care from you. The perfect fit for any outfit/occasion in my opinion.

Straight Leg Possibilities:

3301 Straight: G-Star’s take on the Originator using the 3301 design. These will sit at your waist with equal room throughout the legs, and just a slightly smaller cuff opening, helping you maximize your various footwear selections. I’d compare them to Levis classic 501′s in the fit, but using  better quality denim, for sure.

ATTACC LOW STRAIGHT

Low Straight: With the low straight, you’re getting the best of both worlds. Slim in the legs with a low rise like a skinny, but still with a straight fit, keeping almost the exact straight leg appearance as the 3301 straight. A very similar fit to the Levis 514′s.

Wu-Tang: More Than Just Merch

Wu-Tang Clan has more than earned their “staple” in hip-hop culture for generations to come. Though as of late, the Rap super group has been getting a lot more attention from the youth, with their own apparel company, Wu-Tang Brand LTD. What was once known as “Wu-Wear” is now its own self-titled label, bringing you any and everything the average, obsessive Wu-Tang fanatic could ever want.

With 2014 marking the 20th year Anniversary for their multi-platinum album, “Enter the 36 Chambers” their band merchandise has not only gotten more popular, but Wu-tang Brand LTD also has had the help of a few brands in collaboration. Wu-Tang recently collaborated with G-Shock by Casio on a watch as a commemoration. It’s a black DW-6900 with yellow accents. The Wu “W” shows through the backlight when lit. Since the hype has already passed and they have completely sold out of stores, I wish you the best of luck trying to find one. I’m still on the hunt for one myself, since I don’t feel like paying $500+ from some dude on eBay.

g-shock-wu-tang-watch

As Wu-tang Brand LTD is gaining a bigger following and continuing to shell out new products, they also recently teamed up with HUF for a sweet capsule collection including a strapback hat, a football jersey, some socks for all you plant-lifers, and a pair of HR-1 Boots all in classic Wu colorways.

Imaginary Foundation’s New Direction 2014

The Big Bang of Something Cool

standard-imaginary

I remember Imaginary Foundation’s first prints were based on a solid colored background focusing on a center piece. This kind of design format is one of the reasons I started taking an interest in the brand. My first t-shirt from Imaginary Foundation was one of their earlier designs called “Let the Force Flow.”

The Era of Sublimation

sublimation-imaginary

As time past so did their design setup. It was jarring seeing Imaginary use a 100% polyester all over print. The sublimated material for me was hard to warm up to as it was so radically different from what they had used to print on before.  However their unique and eye catching designs are what kept me coming back for more. Some of my favorite sublimated prints is the “Canyons” design.  Another thing I like about the sublimated prints is that they carry a great deal of detail and cover the entire area of the shirt and still have a silky smooth feel to them. For me, I tend to avoid shirts with too much print as they can be hot and uncomfortable to wear.
The Great Expansion

IMG_0350

Imaginary hasn’t stopped at just t-shirts though. They have expanded their brand to encompass hats, sweaters, women’s leggings and iPhone cases which carry that same idea of utilizing the entire space of the item. What interests me in their hats is that each panel is unique.
